Housing options for people with learning disabilities
This popular session helps individuals, carers, supporters and professionals to understand some of the housing options available to people with learning disabilities. It provides some practical advice about how to explore the options and tips for accessing housing services. Case studies and practical examples help to bring to life some of the options, demonstrating that they can become a reality.
Choice Based Lettings (one or two day course)
Following on from research undertaken for the Department of Health, one course will be specifically aimed at local authorities and housing provider administrators of the scheme. It will examine some of the good and poor practices identified by the research and will help providers understand how they can make their schemes more accessible for people with disabilities and the type of procedural adjustments they may be expected to make to their services under the Disability Discrimination Act. There will also be practical sessions looking at information that is provided to the public and how it is disseminated.
There will also be a session for individuals and those who support them. This will provide practical and accessible advice about what to expect when applying for housing through the scheme, how to get the best from the scheme and what to do if you feel that your disability has not been taken into account.
Mental Capacity and Tenancies
This session is for carers, staff and others supporting people with disabilities to understand issues around mental capacity as they apply to housing and to understand housing rights and responsibilities in supported living. It explores the relationship between the tenant, landlord and support provider, clarifying various roles and responsibilities. Issues covered in this training include:
- A brief overview of the Mental Capacity Act
- Legal capacity – assessing capacity, building capacity using accessible tools, tenants without capacity, the Best Interests decision-making process as it relates to housing
- What is supported living? How is housing and support separate?
- Types of tenancies
- What’s in a tenancy agreement – landlord and tenant responsibilities / expectations,
- Looking at the other agreements in supported living - what’s in a management agreement and a service level agreement - what’s the difference?
Telecare
This training focuses on the practical application and use of telecare with vulnerable people. It is a lively session including group exercises, DVDs and hands-on 'playing' with live telecare equipment. The session includes:
- What is Telecare? – brief overview of what it means, types of equipment and its uses
- Explore some of the barriers to technology
- Explore ethical issues
- Assessing and prescribing Telecare equipment using an electronic assessment tool
- DVDs / case studies to see and discuss equipment in use
