David's Story - Places Where I Have Lived

We worked with David when he needed to move from NHS housing and support as part of the NHS Campus closure project in Kent. His move to Adam Court, a supported living scheme, has changed his life enabling him to become more independent and connected to his local community. David has kindly agreed to share his story.

Darenth Park Hospital

I lived there when I was young. It was not bad.
The grounds were nice.
There was a problem getting out of the grounds as we needed to get a gate pass that needed to be signed by Dr's. It was not easy to get out.
I lived in one big dormitory, there was not much privacy.
You didn’t do your own washing like I do now. It would all get mixed up and you'd share clothes.
People used to play sports like cricket and football. It was fun to watch.

Darenth Park

We used to sit in a big room where we would eat. Sometimes we had a choice of food, sometimes it wasn’t all that grand.
I used to go to school in the week, the school was in the grounds.
At the weekend we would do the cleaning and go to church on a Sunday.
Sometimes we used to go out to shows in London on the coaches.
It wasn’t all that bad .... people used to look down on the place, the staff were helpful. When I moved out I was a little bit sad but it had to happen. I then moved to St Johns Road.

St. John's Road, Dartford

It wasn’t bad. We had our own rooms - there were 3 girls and 3 blokes.
We had a small garden.
We didn’t have our own transport and had to travel by buses or taxi. It was nice going on public bus as I used to meet people.
I got a job working for social services which I still do now. I really enjoy my job.

Culver House

I had my own bedsit at Culver. It was like a flat but my bedroom and living room were together.
I had a small kitchen and bathroom.
We had an area where all the other residents in the building could go and meet.
I didn't get on with one of the other residents.
It was hard to get out the back as the access was not very good and I couldn’t get out the front because of the steps.
Sometimes there was not enough staff to take me out and do the things I wanted to do.

Adam Court

I love it here. I’ve lived here for 2 years.
I get to do loads of things.
I live by myself in my flat, it is is quite big and I can get around it.
I help do my cooking and cleaning.
Staff support me do the things I like. I like going to college going to meetings and seeing my friends and going to clubs and out and about.
I have got my own car now as it was difficult getting about on transport. I’m never in anymore.
I go on holiday now and will be going back to the Isle of Wight.
